Dunbar Roundtable Brings Together State and Local Officials to Discuss Stormwater Management

A roundtable discussion hosted by State Rep. George Dunbar (R-Westmoreland) on Thursday morning at the North Irwin Borough building successfully opened dialogue between state and local officials on the topic of stormwater management.

“One of my major priorities even before being elected was to work on improving communication between state and local governments,” said Dunbar.   “My staff and I choose stormwater management to be our first topic, because it is among the highest priority issues in our office right after Property Tax/Rent rebates and PennDOT questions.”

Elected representatives from the communities of Penn Township, Irwin, North Huntingdon and North Irwin, along with the Westmoreland Municipal Authority listened to and provided feedback on presentations from representatives of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), PennVEST and the Westmoreland Conservation District (WCD).    Topics of discussion included the federal Clean Water Act; defined water obstruction; Growing Greener grants and other types of potential funding options for various clean water and infrastructure projects; permitting processes; and rethinking traditional construction methods and materials.

“Again, the purpose of organizing this roundtable discussion was to keep the lines of communication open between local government and state government officials,” said Dunbar.  “Thursday’s meeting was not only a success because of the amount of innovative solutions and feedback that was shared, but most importantly, it has opened the door for several additional  meetings in the near future, including one with the municipal water authorities and the sewage arm of the DEP;  another meeting between Irwin and North Huntingdon officials regarding a mutual road weight restriction; and a unanimous request for my office to organize similar communication improvement meetings on a quarterly basis.”
